Detailed initial situation

This project is part of the construction and conditioning of several pig farms in the province of Huesca in northern Spain, in which STF Filters has collaborated with its large sand filters.

In this particular case, STF Filters has participated in the water filtration of the Peculo farm, a mother farm with more than 1500 animals, which aims to preserve the continuity of its productive line, optimizing the sanitary resources and increasing the productive efficiency of the farms and minimizing the introduction of diseases.

The filters have been installed to optimize the use of water, filtering it prior to its use on the farm. The initial requirements of the project were a flow rate of 70 m³/h and a pressure of 3-4 bar.

The challenges

The realization of this project involved 2 major challenges for STF Filters. These challenges differentiate and make the result an innovative installation.

The first challenge has consisted of adjusting the installation to the need for flow at each moment, which varies depending on the time of year, to filter the raw water for normal use of the farm, the headquarters and irrigation of the farm's surroundings. At times when not all the water needed is available and demand increases, this facility is designed to reuse some of the wash water. When water is available, this wash water is discharged to drainage. Operation is by means of a system of 2 basins designed by Mazana, a settling basin and a collection basin where the water to be filtered is stored for use, so that there is always a basin with water available for use and filtering. When water availability is low, the filtration system comes into operation, using part of the wash water and redirecting it to the available pond.

The second challenge consisted in the remote management of the equipment, which has been implemented and can be used for control via smartphone, tablet or PC; for remote downloading of data and for other functions that facilitate the management and maintenance of the equipment and give this project high added value, making it a project with a novel design with advanced technological developments.

Solution provided

STF Filters' front ends, composed of sand filters for industry, combine the characteristics of a traditional sand filter adapted to the dimensions and requirements of a sector as demanding as the livestock sector. In this case, the solution consisted of a front-end composed of 3 FIC-1600 filters that filter the raw water through a bed of silica sand. After filtering, the water is collected through the filtering crepines.

STF Filters sand filters are the most versatile on the market. The wide variety of filtering materials that can be placed inside them make these filters suitable for a multitude of applications in different sectors.

On this occasion, gravel, silica sand and anthracite have been selected for filtration. These filters are fully automated, which allows continuous operation of the front end during the individual cleaning of each filter. During washing, the mains water flow is interrupted in order to use the filtered water for washing the equipment. It is important to highlight that during the washing process, the pump working point must provide a flow rate of 70³/h at 25 mca.

Results

In January 2021, the details of the installation and commissioning of the filtration system were finalized by STF Filters' technical team, providing satisfactory operation and high performance, which allows optimizing water utilization at all times of the year.

In this way, the system optimally fulfills the function for which it was designed. Thanks to remote management, our technical team can quickly and easily monitor the operation of the plant and organize the necessary maintenance tasks, since we have detailed information in real time of all the elements that make up this filtration system.
